Rallies have been held in a string of cities across Poland in protest against violence and in tribute to a well-known mayor killed in a knife attack.

Paweł Adamowicz, 53, the mayor of Gdańsk, was stabbed on Sunday evening during a high-profile annual charity drive in the northern Polish city. He died the next day in hospital after a five-hour operation failed to save him.

“Each resident of Gdańsk remembers you from your very young days,” European Council head Donald Tusk said on Monday, in a eulogy addressing the slain mayor.

“You were always there whenever there was the need to be good and courageous and to take a stand against evil.”

Michał Owczarek reports.
