‘Jankiel’s Concerto’ refers to Poland’s national epic ‘Pan Tadeusz’

Jankiel in the title is one of the characters in ‘Pan Tadeusz’ by the Romantic writer Adam Mickiewicz. In it, this Jewish inn-keeper, the master of the dulcimer, plays a medley of Polish patriotic tunes which opens with a joyous polonaise in praise of the Constitution of the Third of May 1791 and ends with the Dąbrowski Mazurka (Poland is not yet lost), a song which later became Poland’s national anthem.
