Local residents have cast their vote in the Poland's first nuclear site referendum.

The village of Gaski in the municipality of Mielno is one of three sites selected by Polish power company PGE last November to host a power station with a capacity of 3 gigawatts. A referendum took place in the Baltic sea resort of Mielno on Sunday, asking for the residents' stand on hosting Poland's first nuclear plant early in the next decade. Some 94 percent of the 2,389 people who took part in the referendum opposed the idea with only 5 percent supporting it. The turnout was 57 percent.

Poland's minister responsible for nuclear energy, Hanna Trojanowska announced that the ministry of economy will consider the results of the referendum, which are not legally binding to the investor - meaning Gąski inhabitants cannot block the construction of the plant there.
