Pressure is growing on Poland’s football association chairman Grzegorz Lato to honour his promise that if Poland failed to qualify for the Euro 2012 knock out stages then he would resign.

“Of course we all know that the Polish football association [PZPN] is not well managed. However, the minister of sport’s [powers in this area] are very limited and we can only appeal to the chairman to keep his word,” a clearly displeased sports minister Joanna Mucha told the TVP broadcaster Tuesday evening.

Grzegorz Lato promised to resign last autumn when he told the Przegląd Sportowe daily that he would stand down from his post if Poland failed to qualify to the last eight of the competition.

Following Poland coming bottom of Group A after losing to the Czech Republic in the third round of group matches last Saturday, Lato said at a press conference on Tuesday, however, that he “sees no reason to resign”.

Meanwhile, members of the Youth for Poland association lit candles outside the PZPN building in Warsaw, Tuesday, calling for Lato’s resignation and rejecting the claim by the chairman that his association had been responsible for the good organization of Euro 2012 in Poland.

“The fact that Euro 2012 was well organized is thanks to state, not [PZPN]" said Sebastian Kaleta from the Youth for Polish organisation. (pg)
