Two other men were present when the accident occurred at 5.25 am on Wednesday morning, but they managed to escape without serious injury.

A rescue team battled for five hours to free the trapper minor.

Specially-installed supports had to be used, so as to secure the ceiling.

However, the man was pronounced dead on being pulled from the rubble.

The victim had been working in the mining industry for some twenty-five years.

Today's accident marks the 24th death in Polish mines this year, 19 of which were in coal mines.

The Ruda Slaska site was the scene of one of the worst mining accidents in Polish history in 2009, when 20 men perished as a result of an explosion 1050 metres below the earth's surface. (nh)
