The butterfly has been dubbed Erateina puellaastuta (Erateina clever girl/Erateina sprytna dziewczyna), after 600 potential names were sent in to the Polish edition of National Geographic magazine.

Alicja Zdobylak from Wroclaw in south west Poland is the happy winner of the contest.

“Butterflies remind me of women's sense of cunning,” Zdobylak told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

“It's not easy to catch them, and they appear at unexpected moments,” she said.

“I think that the name is beautiful, yet also mysterious,” she concluded.

The new species was discovered in February 2012, in south east Venezuela, and was confirmed by naturalists from the Zoological Museum of the Jagiellonian University, Krakow.

Erateina puellaastuta was one of two previously unknown species of butterfly discovered on the trip. Naturalists also found a hitherto unrecorded species of frog. (nh)
