Forty-five year old Dr. Brunon. K. (full name withheld under Polish privacy laws), a former lecturer at Krakow's Agricultural University, was arrested on 9 November.

“The prosecution wants to change the main charge against Brunon K. and is not ruling out further ones for other crimes,” revealed Artur Wrona, head of the Apellate Prosecutor's Office in Krakow in an interview with the TVN 24 news channel.

“Currently, Brunon K. is suspected of preparing an attack on the constitutional authorities of Poland, and we would consider this to be a crime of terrorism in its character,” he said.

“This is significant for the sentence that the court might issue,” he noted.

“Thanks to this change... the suspect could be sentenced to up to up to seven and a half years in prison, as opposed to just five.”

Wrona also noted that the prosecution hopes to consolidate charges made in late November against Brunon K. concerning the illegal possession of weapons.

Prosecutors are waiting for ballistics experts to provide precise documentation of the seized weaponry, so that charges can be supplemented.

Meanwhile, two lawyers who are defending Brunon K. have revealed that they may cooperate with a third, thus employing the maximum quota of lawyers for the defence under Polish law.

“The case is so extensive and complicated that we would like to propose cooperation with one more lawyer,” said Anna Kobinska, in an interview with the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

Brunon K. was described by prosecutors in November as a nationalist and an anti-semite, and it was claimed that he believed that “the situation in the country was going in the wrong direction because all leading governmental positions were occupied by 'foreigners'.”

Speaking yesterday, Artur Wrona emphasized that Brunon K “was not affiliated with any political organization.” (nh)
