Katarzyna Krzeszowska, 172 cms tall from Krynicy Zdrój, southern Poland, won the contest, covered live on the Polsat television channel from Plock in central Poland, is a student at Krakow university where she is studying art.

Katarzyna told Małopolskie.tv that her favourite painter is Salvador Dali and in the future she would like to work with computer graphics and advertising.

The Miss World competition – a contest which has seen a dramatic fall in status since its heyday in the 1970s and 80s – will be held next year in Jakata, Indonesia.

In an attempt to keep pace with the times, the contest no longer judges contestants on their looks alone, but also on personality and intelligence, say the organisers.

The current Miss World is Yu Wenzia from China. (pg)
