Ten people have already been killed by freezing temperatures in Poland as the thermometer dropped to minus 12 degrees over night in some areas.

The victims were mostly homeless or incapacitated by alcohol, with Poland's police issuing a statement saying: “Sometimes a phone call can save a life,” urging passersby to stop and help if they see anyone in difficulty in the streets this winter.

Police spokeswoman in the north-eastern Warmia-Mazury province, Anna Fic, said two “transient men” were found dead on Sunday morning and, in another incident, three men were found camped out on the street in the town of Szczytno: one was dead and the other two taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia.

In the village of Grom, near Szczytno, a 50 year-old man was found dead at his home.

In the Malopolska province in southern Poland, three men – with ages ranging from 37 to 67 years-old - died from hypothermia.

Freezing temperatures were also the most likely cause of death of a 64-year-old man whose body was found on Saturday near Krosno in the Podkarpackie province, also in southern Poland.

“The man failed to return from work. After several hours, the family notified the police who started a search. He was found later on Saturday afternoon,” Jacek Kocan, a spokesman for the local police said, adding that the man appeared to have fallen on ice and lost consciousness.

Two men also died in the central Mazovia province and another two in Kujawsko-Pomorskie province, northern Poland.

The sub-zero temperatures also claimed the lives of seven people in the Czech Republic and winter claimed the lives of six across the Balkans, in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. (pg)
