Seven die from methanol poisoning

A 35 year-old man has become the fifth to die from alcohol tainted with methanol in Stargard Szczecinski, northwest Poland, bringing the number of casualties over Christmas to seven.

Przemysław Kimon, spokesman for police in the city of Szczecin confirmed to Polish Radio that five people died from methanol poisoning in the town, including three men and one woman.

Two homeless men also died in the western city of Gniezno over Christmas from methanol poisoning.

In September, 38 people died in the Czech Republic and four in Poland from methanol poisoning after drinking contanimated spirits.

Czech authorities banned the sale and export of alcohol over the strength of 20 percent and police arrested a Czech and Slovak national in connection with the deaths. (pg)
