Cardinal Glemp lying in state ahead of burial

UPDATE - Cardinal Jozef Glemp, who died on Wednesday night at the age of 83, is lying in state at the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Warsaw, Sunday, before his funeral and burial on Monday.

The lying in state is part of a three-day funeral for the cardinal.

On Sunday, Mass was celebrated at the Basilica of the Holy Cross, from where, in the late afternoon hours, his coffin will be carried in a procession to the crypt of St John the Baptist’s Cathedral in Warsaw,, for Monday’s main ceremonies.

“I invite you all to manifest your gratitude to the deceased cardinal,” Metropolitan of Warsaw Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz has said in a statement, adding that Cardinal Glemp was "an apostle of unity and harmony."

Cardinal Glemp was Primate of Poland from 1981 to 2009 and appointed his place at the top of the Roman Catholic Church in Poland after the death of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski. (pg)
