Apolonia Lisowska was joined by friends and family in the Warsaw nursing home where she now lives.

Lisowska, who was born near Grodno (currently in Belarus), has lived through two world wars.

Owing to the latter she endured deportation to Kazakhstan by the Soviets along with thousands of other ethnic Poles who lived in Poland's eastern borderlands.

She returned to Poland in 1956, after the thaw that followed Stalin's death, and took work in a sweets factory.

Lisowska has a daughter, a grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Poland's oldest citizen remains Captain Jozef Kowalski, who is just 18 days older than Lisowska.

Kowalski is the last living veteran of the Polish-Soviet war of 1919-1921. (nh)
