“Ten of the injured are in a serious condition,” confirmed Pawel Fratczak, a spokesman for the local fire brigade, to the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

The accident happened on the DK1 national road a little before 4 am as heavy snow fell across the region. Three buses were travelling in convoy, carrying Lechia Gdansk fans from a match against Piast Gliwice.

The casualties are understood to be fans.

“All we know is that the bus came off the road, went through a ditch and then turned over in a field,” police spokesperson Malgorzata Marczak told the TVN24 news channel.

Late winter snowfalls have made road conditions hazardous across much of Poland.

Meanwhile, the section of the DK1 road has now reopened to traffic. (nh)
