The marches were held under the slogan “Family is our direction” with organisers attracting attention to the demographic deficit the country is experiencing, with a declining number of couples deciding to have children.

Last year saw around 50 similar demonstrations in Poland.

According to Anna Borkowska-Kniołek from the organiser's Warsaw office, Poland is already at the bottom of the world list of countries as far as the number of children being born is concerned.

“In forty years' time the country’s population will shrink by as many as two million people. On top of that, if we do not act now in thirty to forty years we can expect a major economic crisis,” she told Polish Radio.

The participants of the pro-life and pro-family march in Warsaw also collected signatures in support of the European Civic Initiative for the protection of human life. (di/pg)
