Storms wreak havoc in southern Poland

Thunderstorms and heavy rain and wind ripped roofs off 70 homes in the southern Malopolska region on Thursday.

A spokesman for the National Fire Service said they were called out on 220 separate occasions as the storms battered the southern region of Poland and fire engines were called out 990 times throughout the country.
Fire fighters removed fallen trees from roads and pumped out water from flooded basements.
Meanwhile, police say 22 people have been killed and 188 accidents occurred since Wednesday night, at the start of a long weekend Corpus Christi holiday in Poland.
Police spokesman Krzysztof Hajdas told the PAP news agency that 238 have been injured and 797 people arrested for drunk driving. (pg)
