The main No. 74 national route was made impassable in several sections, as was the No. 753 road from Kielce to Ostrowiec Swiętokrzyski. Flooding in the latter was at its worst in the vicinity of Bielin.

Firemen were called to action in around 2000 separate incidents across southern, western and central Poland.

Besides the Swietokrzyskie region, firemen were chiefly involved in actions in Lower and Upper Silesia, Malopolska, as well as the central Lodz and Mazovia regions.

Currently, alarm levels have been crossed at 56 locations along Poland's rivers, and the warning level has been reached at 99 sites, though the major city in the Malopolska area, Krakow, has so far escaped any flooding.

Extensive portions of eastern Germany and the Czech Republic remained under water on Thursday, and the government has warned that the worst is still to come.

Thousands of residents in the city of Halle, eastern Germany were evacuated as the centre of the city was flooded to one metre over ground level.

The city of Dresden on the River Elbe saw many residents flee yesterday, with peak waters on the River Elbe expected today.

Meanwhile, about 19,000 people have been evacuated nationwide in the Czech Republic.

At least eight people have lost their lives so far in the Czech Republic, five more in Germany, two in Austria and one in Slovakia. (nh/pg)
