Widow detonates WWII missile while spring cleaning

A 56-year old woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after accidentally detonating a WWII anti-aircraft missile while cleaning her house in Jawornik, south east Poland.

Police probing the premises near the town of Strzyszow initially assumed that the accident had been caused by a gas cylinder that had exploded at the house.
However, they soon established that the damage had been done by a World War II anti-aircraft missile that had been stored behind a cupboard in the kitchen.
It is understood that the woman's late husband brought the missile to the house some years ago, and family members had assumed that the relic was no longer dangerous.
Police believe that the woman knocked the missile with a broom while reaching behind the cupboard.
The explosion destroyed much of the kitchen but the structure of the building itself remains intact.
The region is still riddled with missiles and last summer, during 'Operation Detector', 2.5 tonnes of WWII explosives were destroyed in controlled explosions near the former Nazi German missile base at Blizna. (nh)
