Man arrested after hammer attack on Egyptian

An arrest has been made in connection with a brutal hammer attack on an Egyptian man at the railway station in Katowice, southern Poland.

At present, police have only revealed that the detained man is a resident of the Silesian city.

The attack occurred at about 10 pm local time on the night of 17 May.

As was recorded on the station's monitoring system, the assailant approached the Egyptian, who was apparently minding his business, and plunged a hammer into his face.

The Egyptian, who works in the tourist industry and has permanent residency in Poland, suffered a broken nose and cuts.

Images of the attack were duly published on the web site of the Katowice police, and an appeal was made for witnesses to come forward. (nh)
