According to police spokesman Dariusz Nowak, Dominik M. (full name withheld under Polish privacy laws), was influenced by former black metal star Varg Vikernes, who was convicted in 1994 for murder and arson.

“The man suspected of carrying out the arson was fascinated by the actions of the leader of one of Norway's black metal groups who was convicted of burning down several churches and of the murder of a member of his group,” Nowak told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

Krakow's Church of Holy Mary, Queen of Poland, in the western Wola Justowska district, was burnt to the ground on the night of 5 June 2002.

The official investigation was suspended several years ago, but police continued to look into the matter.

“It was necessary to gather strong evidence, and the case was made especially difficult by the distance of time,” Nowak said.

Boguslawa Marcinkowska, spokesperson for Krakow's District Prosecutor's Office, told PAP that the suspect is refusing to answer questions and is pleading not guilty. (nh)
