Explosives seized in 'Polish Breivik' case raid

A man was also arrested in conjunction with the raid at the house in Warsaw's south-western Wlochy district.

“The detained man will be questioned by officers from the Internal Security Agency (ABW), and then he will be brought to Krakow,” confirmed Piotr Kosmaty, spokesman for the Krakow Appellate Prosecutor's Office, as quoted by the Dziennik Polski newspaper.

Yesterday's action was carried out by the Internal Security Agency with Warsaw police, and two neighbouring houses were evacuated prior to the raid.

Kosmaty told Polish Radio that both explosive materials and individual weapons were found at the site.

The central defendant in the case, Dr Brunon K. (full name withheld under Polish privacy laws) was arrested on 9 November.

The academic, who lectured at the Krakow Agricultural University, was allegedly planning to drive a vehicle packed with explosives into Poland's main parliamentary building in Warsaw, while the president and the prime minister were present.

Earlier this week, forensic psychiatrists submitted a report that concluded that Brunon K. is “sane” and fit to stand trial, and the suspect faces a 15-year prison sentence.

Brunon K. was originally charged with “preparing an attack against the constitutional authorities of Poland.”

Last week, prosecutors increased the charges against him, defining the offences as characteristic of “terrorism.”

He has also been charged with the illegal possession of firearms and weaponry. (nh)
