Tarnow city mayor arrested in corruption affair

The mayor of the southern Polish city of Tarnow has been arrested on suspicion of taking bribes.

Officers from Poland's Internal Security Agency (ABW), detained Ryszard S. (full name withheld under Polish privacy laws), on Friday morning.

It is understood that the mayor has been held in connection with bribes he allegedly received in connection with the construction of as section of the A4 motorway.

It has been reported that he received bribes to the level of 50,000 zloty (11,800 euros).

At the beginning of September, Danuta B., an employee at Tarnow's town hall, was detained in connection with the motorway case.

The regional court approved for Danuta B. to be held for three months while the investigation continues.

Ryszard S. is a former winner of the 'Man of the Year' prize of regional paper Gazeta Krakowska.

In the last elections, held in 2010, he ran as an independent candidate, supported by Prime Minister Donald Tusk's Civic Platform Party. (nh)
