A 74-year-old priest became the first casualty of this winter in the Polish Carpathians after he failed to return to base having visited a mountain shelter.

The man's body was found on Monday night on Mount Turbacz in the Gorce Mountains, a part of the Carpathian range that spans southern Poland.
Members of Poland's Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue organisation (GOPR) noted that the man had probably been taken by surprise by the sudden snowfall.
“He had bad luck. If he had managed to cover just one more kilometre, he would have reached some buildings,” revealed Mariusz Zarod from GOPR, speaking with the TVN24 news channel.
Yesterday it was confirmed that as much as 30 cm of snow already blankets parts of Polish Carpathians. (nh)
