Around 26,000 homes were also without electricity on Sunday as a result of the extreme weather conditions since Thursday.

Some 77 people have been injured, and firefighters have been taken part in about 12,500 actions across the country.

Having initially caused most damage in the coastal West Pomerania region, the storm created most problems yesterday in the Wielkopolska region of western Poland, where some 8000 households are still without electricity.

The problems were exacerbated by snowfalls that accompanied the intense winds.

However, fire brigade spokesman Pawel Fratczak has said that the situation is now changing for the better.

“The weather has improved and the winds have abated,” he told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

“A thaw is coming, but there is no threat of flooding.”

“The situation is being continually monitored,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has forecast that winds will more moderate on Monday, and that apart from the Carpathian mountains in the south, the snow will be replaced by sleet and rain. (nh/pg)
