According to the survey by Poland's Public Opinion Research Centre (OBOP), 89 percent of female respondents said they normally do the cleaning up over the Christmas period, 81 percent said they do the cooking, 76 percent said they do the household shopping, 73 percent buy the presents, and 66 percent decorate the house.

By contrast, only 52 percent of men have claimed that they get involved in cleaning up, and just 24 percent try their hand in the kitchen.

Children are most active when it comes to decorating the house and the Christmas tree (choinka), with 30 percent joining in in this sphere.

As regards what Poles associate Christmas with (respondents were able to submit several choices) 75 percent said it was a time for family, 61 percent said it was a religious event, 40 percent said it was an opportunity to rest and have free time, and 40 percent said it was a time to eat good food.

By custom, Poles are supposed to eat twelve dishes on Christmas Eve (Wigilia), symbolising the twelve apostles. Some 82 percent picked carp as among the most important choices, followed by beetroot soup with dumplings (barszcz z uszkami) at 68 percent. Other time-honoured favourites were herring, and cabbage with peas.

This year, 23 percent of those surveyed said they will buy some presents over the internet, compared with 12 percent last year.

Perfumes and cosmetics topped the list of popular purchases (40 percent), followed by clothing and footwear (26 percent) and sweets (26 percent). Only 12 percent of those surveyed said they would buy books. (nh)
