Alleged Krakow paedophile charged after computer check

According to police, the suspect's computer was seized after an anonymous tip-off that was not related to child abuse.

Deputy Inspector Marek Ciarka has revealed that police had been informed that Tomasz P. (full name withheld under Polish privacy laws) had illegal computer software programmes at his flat, as well as pirated discs.

Police performed a routine check to clarify whether the suspect had broken copyright laws.

While examining Tomasz P.'s computer, a short video was found in which the suspect appeared to be sexually abusing a minor. It soon emerged that the girl was the man's 15 year-old step-daughter.

“Tomasz P. has effectively admitted to carrying out such an act, but says that he only did so once,” Ciarka told the Gazeta Krakowska daily. “However, we have reason to suspect that he did this on more occasions.”

Tomasz P. could hear further charges: at present, he faces up to 12 years in prison and has been detained for a preliminary period of three months. (nh)
