A convicted paedophile in Poland who murdered four boys will continue to be monitored even if he does get full parole, say police.

Mariusz Trynkiewicz was sentenced to death in September 1989, yet three months later, parliament declared an amnesty for all those facing the death penalty as a wave of optimism swept through the country following the collapse of communism.

All death sentences were commuted to 25-year prison sentences.

Trynkiewicz is technically due parole this month, although medical documents obtained by the TVN news channel indicate that there is a risk that he will re-offend.

According to a psychologist's report, Trynkiewicz regards the murders as part of an “episodic” behavioural syndrome that grips him “unexpectedly” from time to time.

Police have said that if necessary, Trynkiewicz will be monitored 24-hours per day if he is given parole.

This typically involves five officers if the monitoring is carried out on foot, and ten officers by car.

However, this may not occur as Trynkiewicz may be transferred from prison to a mental health unit in Gostynin, central Poland.

“We will take all the appropriate measures for this situation,” commented police chief Marek Działoszynski.

Trynkiewicz was convicted of child abuse on several occasions during the 1980s. In July 1988 he lured a 13-year-old boy to his flat in PiotrkowTrybunalski, central Poland, raped and murdered the child, and then hid the body in the woods. Several weeks later he invited a further three boys to his flat. They all met the same fate as the first victim. (nh)
