Close to a thousand snow ploughs were deployed across Poland overnight, but in many regions, the ploughs were fighting a losing battle.

In the north eastern Warmia-Masuria region, where eight cm of snow fell overnight, an ambulance got stuck in a snowdrift in the village of Wilunie, and a police car suffered the same fate at Silice, near Olsztyn.

In Warsaw, salt-spreading vehicles were sent out at 11 pm for what was intended to be a three-hour stint, but owing to the dire conditions the action was extended.

In the surrounding Masovia region, several train services were cancelled, and there have been numerous delays to running services.

Poland's General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) has urged drivers to be especially cautious across the country, with blizzards liable to cause poor visibility. (nh)
