Naturalists have confirmed that four species of bat are hibernating this year in the Suwalki Landscape Park of north east Poland, in spite of warm temperatures.

The bats mainly hibernate in 17 shelters, dubbed 'little shops', which are prepared each year for the winged mammals.

The most common species this year is the Daubenton's Bat, with 66 examples spotted, although park director Teresa Swierubska says the exceptionally mild winter has had an impact.

“The counting this year has been quite difficult, as the winter is rather warm,” she said.

“During the counting the temperatures were up, so some bats were not sleeping.”

Bats typically hibernate in December, and awaken in April, although this winter that was not the case.

There are 22 species of bat in Poland, all of which are protected.

The Suwalki Landscape Park was founded in 1976, and it includes three separate nature reserves. (nh)
