Six people were taken to hospital and one female passenger is understood to be in a life-threatening condition.

The woman sustained severe facial injuries, according to Danuta Szymczykiewicz from the city's ambulance service.

Shortly after 10 am local time one tram was apparently waiting at a red light when another on the same line rammed into it from behind.

It has been suggested that there might have been a problem with the second vehicle's brakes, but police spokesperson Marzanna Boratynska has said that it is too early to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Both drivers were found to sober after being tested following the crash. (nh)
