Mayor Wadim Tyszkiewicz revealed details of the accident on his Facebook page on Monday.

“I saw death. Yesterday evening I saw with my own eyes a drunk driver kill a young cyclist,” he wrote.

“I'm still in shock.”

Tyszkiewicz said he witnessed the driver of a Volkswagen Golf career into the 26-year-old male cyclist, who was catapulted into the air. The driver then apparently tried to flee the scene in his car.

“I called 112 and went in pursuit of the killer,” the mayor wrote.

“The bloke was completely drunk, and his 18-year-old son was travelling with him.

“The murderer was aggressive and I had to restrain him until the police arrived.”

Police have confirmed that two men from Lubon, near Poznan, were detained in the incident.

“I was wondering whether or not I should write about this on Facebook,” Tyszkiewicz noted.

“But I decided to do it, so as to make an appeal to all drivers: I beg you not to get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” he wrote.

A rash of road accidents following New Year's Eve revelry prompted the government to put forward proposals on how to tackle the problem of drink driving.

A proposal for all drivers to carry a breathalyser in their vehicles was among the ideas suggested, but no new legislation has been read in parliament to date.

A new report by the European Commission found that Poland has the second worst rate of road accidents in the EU, after Romania. (nh)
