With five weeks to go before European parliamentary elections, the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) has a three percentage point lead over the ruling Civic Platform in Poland, according to a new poll.

Law and Justice would receive 32 per cent of the vote if a general election was held in April, while Prime Minister Donald Tusk's centre-right Civic Platform is on 29 percent, according to a survey carried out by the TNS Polska Institute.

Civic Platform has been catching up with Law and Justice in all polls taken this year, with TNS reporting that Law and Justice's lead has narrowed from ten percentage points in January to just three percent in April.

A poll by TNS earlier this month asking respondents specifically how they would vote in European elections found Civic Platform with a one percent lead over their rivals.

The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) can count on 10 percent support according to the latest poll, and the junior coalition partner Polish Peasant Party (PSL) on five percent of the vote.

Fifty four percent told TNS Polska they would vote in elections.

Poland takes part in the vote to elect MEPs to the European Parliament on 25 May. (pg/mk)
