An unexplained smell of gas has forced a section of Warsaw's underground Metro line to close for the second day running, causing travel chaos for thousands of commuters on Wednesday morning.

Warsaw Metro spokesman Krzysztof Malawko told the PAP news agency that train drivers thought they smelled gas between Ratusz Arsenał and Dworzec Gdański stations to the north of the centre of the capital and fire fighters evacuated around 500 passengers from the underground rail system early in the morning.

On Tuesday afternoon, a large section of the metro was closed after the smell of gas was detected, though no leaks were found to have occurred.

Constructors are currently tunnelling under Warsaw, building a second line, east to west in the capital.

The Metro was closed on Wednesday morning between Słodowiec and Politechnika stations. (pg)
