“I have good genes and lead a healthy lifestyle,” Alexander Imich has told the TVP public broadcaster.

Imich was born Czestochowa, which was then part of the Russian Tsarist empire but fled to the Soviet Union when the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939.

When his wife refused to accept Soviet citizenship, the couple were sent to a gulag.

In 1951, Mr and Mrs Imich moved to the USA and settled in New York, where Aleksander has lived a happy, and long, life ever since. (pg)
