Civic Platform with narrow lead ahead of Euro elections

Ten days before Poles vote in European Parliament elections, a new poll finds that the ruling Civic Platform has a one percentage point lead over the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party.

Civic Platform, who are members of the centre-right European People's Party (EPP) in the European Parliament are on 21 percent support, while Law and Justice (PiS) allied to the European Conservatives and Reformist (ECR) group are on 20 percent.

The poll by CBOS finds that the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) are on six percent, as is the eurosceptic 'New Right' party under the leadership of political maverick Janusz Korwin-Mikka.

No other party, including the current junior partner in Poland's coalition government, the Polish Peasants Party (PSL) would receive the five percent share of the vote to be eligible for seats in the European Parliament.

Forty one percent told the pollster they intend to vote in the Europe-wide elections, which are taking place between 22 and 25 May.

The poll was conducted between 22 April and 4 May from a a representative random sample of 1,057. (pg)
