A dramatic simulation of an accident involving a cyclist and tram has been played out as part of a new road safety campaign by authorities in Krakow, southern Poland.

A stuffed dummy played the role of a cyclist who falls in front of a tram, which was a re-enactment of an actual incident on the streets of Krakow in March, when the driver just managed to stop the tram in time (see video below).

Krakow has an undeveloped cycle path system, with tram tracks snaking across much of the centre of the city, adding to the dangers awaiting an unsuspecting cyclist.

The re-enactment by the local authorities in Krakow comes before a referendum on 25 May, where voters will be asked whether they want more cycle paths in Poland's most tourist-friendly location.

The question has been controversially included in a ballot on whether locals want to stage the 2022 Winter Olympics, along with two other questions on local issues. (pg)
