A see-saw results process began after Sunday's exit poll gave Civic Platform a one percent advantage over Law and Justice, only to see the lead fall away with 91 percent of votes counted on Monday morning.

But with votes from abroad added to the total, the final result puts Prime Minister Donald Tusk's centre-right Civic Platform on 32.13 %, Law and Justice 31.78 %, Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) 9.44 %, New Right 7.13 % and Polish Peasants Party (PSL) 6.8 %.

Turnout was 23.82 percent.

Civic Platform and Law and Justice will have 19 MEPs in the new European Parliament, SLD five, while PSL and the anti-EU New Right will have four representatives in the assembly.

Losers

Big losers on the night included former finance minister Jacek Rostowski (Civic Platform) who failed in his bid to enter the parliament, though another former finance minister Anna Fotyga will be part of the 19 MEPs for the eurosceptic Law and Justice party.

Celebrity candidates who will not be taking seats in the European Parliament include heavyweight boxer Tomasz Adamek, who stood in the Katowice constituency for the 'United Poland' party, which with 3.98 percent of the vote nationwide failed to get past the five percent threshold to be eligible for seats in the parliament.

Other big losers on the night were candidates standing for the 'Europa Plus – Your Movement' liberal-left grouping, which had the backing of former president of Poland Aleksander Kwasniewski and liberal leader Janusz Palikot but only received 3.58 percent.

The far-right National Movement only received 1.4 percent of the vote nationwide. (pg)
