The funeral of Wojciech Jaruzelski, who declared martial law in 1981 in an attempt to crush the Solidarity trade union movement and who died on Sunday aged 90, will begin at 2 pm at Warsaw's prestigious Powazki Military Cemetery.

The general, still a controversial figure in Poland 25 years since the fall of communism, will be buried near the grave of Bolseslaw Bierut, a former communist leader of Poland after WWII.

Before the funeral, at 11 am, there will be a special mass for the deceased at the Field Cathedral of the Polish Army.

An opposition MP and opponents of Wojciech Jaruzelski have threatened to try and stop the funeral procession as it moves from the cathedral to his last resting place. (pg)
