Eliezer Gurary has been nominated as the Rabbi of Krakow, the first time since WWII that the city’s Rabbi has been officially nominated by the head of the local Jewish community.

In previous years the position was designated by the Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich.
Eliezer Gurary was born in Israel. He has been living in Krakow for eight years, presiding the local branch of the Chabad Lubavich Hasidic movement. He is married, with four daughters.
The nomination ceremony was held at the Tempel Synagogue in the former Jewish district of Kazimierz and the nomination certificate was signed by the head of the city’s Jewish community Tadeusz Jakubowicz and over a dozen rabbis from around the world.
The event was attended by the Mayor of Krakow Jacek Majchrowski.
A group of young Jews staged a picket at the entrance to the synagogue protesting against the new Rabbi’s recent remarks about Polish anti-Semitism.
“All non-Jews do not like the Jewish people. All people understand it and know about it,” he is quoted Israel National News as saying.
Even though the Rabbi apologized for his remarks, the protesters are against his nomination. (mk/pg)
