In a recent ranking by the Wall Street Journal, Morskie Oko is described as “the hidden gem sitting at the bottom of a blue-green valley […] icy in winter, [with] herds of chamois eating the delicate flora that sprouts along its banks [in the summer].”
The name ‘Morskie Oko” translates as ‘Eye of the Sea’, a reference to an old legend, according to which the lake was connected to the sea via an undergroung passage.
Located at 1,045 metres above sea level, Morskie Oko is among the most popular destinations in the Tatras, attracting over 50,000 visitors during the summer holiday season.
It takes about two hours to get there from the nearest bus stop and parking lot. It is a starting point for hikers planning to scale several peaks surrounding the lake, including Rysy, at 2,499 metres the highest moutain in the Polish Tatras.
The other lakes listed by the Wall Street Journal are Lake Powell in the United States, Lake Nakuru in Kenya, Lake Lucerne in Switzerland and Lake Saimaa in Finland. (mk/jb)
