Police also managed to stop almost 1,300 drunk drivers, the latest police statistics quoted by the Polish Press Agency on Monday reveal.

The major causes of accidents are speeding, not giving right of way, incorrect overtaking manoeuvres and driving under the influence of alcohol.

“We stopped 1,295 drunk drivers over the past three days,” police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski said.

The number of accidents rose this weekend by 12 fatalities. Last weekend, only 18 people died and 433 people were injured in 305 accidents, with 1,232 drunk drivers stopped by the authorities. (jb)
