The farmer had apparently banged on the doors of the clinic, but instead of letting him in, staff called the police.

By the time that officers arrived at the scene, the man was dead.

Hospital director Jolanta Klimkiewicz declined to comment on the death but said that it was normal practice to keep the clinic shut at night.

However, Joanna Mierzwińska, a spokesman for the National Health Fund (NFZ) in Wroclaw has expressed surprise that this was the case.

“This is the first time we have heard of a hospital being closed at night,” she told the news section of onet.pl.

“This is a tragedy, because the facility is there to help, not to block [people],” commented Marek Gajos, head of the county administration.

The case is currently being investigated by a local public prosecutor's office. (nh)
