Fire-fighters had to intervene around 100 times, say local emergency services, and up to 20,000 homes were left without electricity.

Buildings were also damaged in the town of Kraczkowa, Podkarpacie province.

Meanwhile, figures from the Ministry of Administration and Digitisation reveal that between May and August, around 90 million zloty (22.5 million euro) was spent on post-storm and flood clean-up operations.

The amount also includes one-off subsidy payments amounting to 6,000 zloty for families affected by the severe weather. (pg/jb)
