The Ice Bucket Challenge, to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research, went viral on the internet this summer.

Politicians such as George W. Bush, rapper 50 Cent and actor Ben Affleck have all joined in the challenge of dumping a bucket of freezing water over their heads after receiving a dare to do so.

If the dare is refused then a donation to charity must be made.

But when Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny challenged Donald Tusk take the plunge, the Polish prime minister tweeted: “Thanks for the nomination # ALSIceBucketChallenge. Today I make a payment to the Dignitas Dolentium account to help suffers of ALS”.

The US-based ALS Association, which had raised 64 million USD in 2013, raised more than 10 million USD on Thursday, 21 August 2014 alone. (pg)
