The 61-year-old man had a private firm, and he only carried patients who did not require a doctor to be present in the vehicle.

He had been transporting a female patient from a clinic in Myslowice to a hospital in Katowice when police received a tip-off about the vehicle.

Not only did the man fail a breath test, it also emerged that he did not have a valid driving licence.

According to police spokesman Jacek Pytel, the man's licence had been revoked due the poor state of his health.

Pytel said the ambulance driver faces up to two years behind bars. (nh)
