Dachshunds are the most ubiquitous dogs in Krakow, and the organisers of the event cited evidence on Sunday that the first dachshund came to the city 500 years ago.

The parade started as a decidedly local affair, but it soon began to attract dog-lovers from abroad, and as it was a bitch called Neferteeny from Tennessee, United States, won the coveted distinction of being crowned queen this year, on account of her royal bearing. Polish dog Amalfini was elected king.

Meanwhile, all four-legged participants were given the opportunity of a visiting a 'canine beauty salon' free of charge, and vets were also present on the market square, providing advice to dog-lovers. (nh)
