A mock abduction staged by a stag party turned sour over the weekend in Ilawa, northern Poland, with charges now being pressed against the group for wasting police time.

Bystanders in the town tipped off police on Saturday afternoon that a khaki-clad group of men, all wearing balaclavas and seemingly carrying guns, had kidnapped a man and were driving him across town in a silver volkswagen.

The man had apparently been abducted outside a local supermarket.

All available patrol cars in the area were put on standby.

However, the group was eventually tracked down to a paintballing ground.

Members of the Polish party tried to explain to police officers that the 'kidnapping' had been done in good humour, as their target was about to get married.

Nevertheless, the officers were not amused.

“The finale of this 'innocent fun' will be in court,” Ilawa police stated on the force's official web site. (nh)
