The matzeva, which was in two pieces, has been relocated to Warsaw's Okopowa Jewish Cemetery as part of an initiative led by the international foundation From the Depths.

The owner of the plot of land had tried unsuccessfully to find a home for the tombstone.

Her luck changed when a cousin based in the US tipped her off about From the Depths, which runs a programme called the Matzeva Project, focused on tracking down isolated tombstones and restoring Jewish cemeteries.

As luck would have it, the Polish Strongman Federation had recently offered its services to the foundation.

Former world champion Tomasz Kowal found that the larger of the two tombstone pieces (weighing 250 kg) was so heavy that he needed help from fellow muscleman Grzegorz Wisniewski.

Together they rose to the challenge.

More information about the From the Depths foundation can be found at the organisation's official web page. (nh)
