Gas explosion in Bytom injures eight

A gas explosion in an apartment block in the southern Polish city of Bytom has left eight people injured, including a child.

Katowice city officials told the Polish Press Agency (PAP) that the explosion occurred at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday in a five-storey block.
Firefighters on duty informed PAP that the explosion took place in a ground-floor flat and as a result the ceiling leading to the first floor collapsed.
The blast shattered several windows in the building.
TVN24 news station reported that 46 people were evacuated from the area.
Six of the injured have already been released from hospital. (rg)
