The blaze occurred in the attic of a two-storey townhouse, destroying part of the roof.

One victim was declared dead at the site, while the second died shortly afterwards in an ambulance.

Fourteen residents were safely evacuated from the building.

Initial reports indicated that the fire was caused by an explosion of gas cylinders.

However, the local fire brigade has contradicted this theory.

''I do not confirm the initial version of events relating to the explosion of gas cylinders,'' said fire brigade spokesman Andrzej Szozda.

''The explosion could have occured as a result of the accumulation of fumes and their violent inflammation,'' he added.
