The man was taken to hospital in the town after it emerged that the police shot had hit the man in the back, although authorities have confirmed that the man’s life is not in danger.

“At around 11 pm local time police were checking the documents of a group of people when all of a sudden one member of the group got in the vehicle and tried to run over the policemen,” Hubert Adamek, a spokesman for the Opole police told the TVP broadcaster.

“One of the police officers fired in the direction of the vehicle, although the perpetrator managed to get away,” he added.

All police units in the area were alerted to the escape, and roadblocks were set up on all roads leading to and from Nysa.

Shot in the back

According to information obtained from TVP reporters, two shots were fired in the direction of the vehicle, one hitting a side window and one going through the back window.

The 22-year-old drove his Audi Q7 car to his father’s home a few kilometres from Nysa, although upon arrival it transpired that he had to be taken to hospital.

“At around 1.30 am a person who was connected to the incident was admitted to the hospital,” Adamek confirmed.

Doctors immediately decided to operate on the man to remove a bullet which had lodged itself near the man’s spine. The operation got under way at 3 am and was successful, it has been reported.

The man was taken to the regional hospital in Opole and his condition has been described as serious, but stable.

Police have confirmed that the 22-year-old driver is known to the authorities. Prosecutors and police are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. (jb)
